Yesterday morning we had a doctor's appointment in Oakville for one of the kids. When we were on the QEW (major highway for those who don't know Ontario) coming home around 1:00 PM, just before we got to our exit (North Shore Blvd), right around Brant Street, traffic slowed right down, and I noticed that there were no cars on the other side, and there were OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) cruisers blocking the entire highway. I was still in the passing lane so I had a better view of the other side. There was something laying in the middle of the highway, big enough that at first I said "Oh, shit, there's someone laying on the road". As we creeped a little closer; I said hmm, no looks like a dog ran out onto the highway somehow, but as we got closer still it looked awfully big to be a dog. That's about the time I saw the female officer with the rifle standing about 10 feet away from the whatever it was, I still figured it was probably a big, rabid dog. Just as I looked, she leveled the rifle and I heard the bang through the closed windows. Nobody else in the car heard it, because my wife was surprised when I said "Whatever it is, she shot it". About 10 seconds after the bang, we drove past and we all saw it, and she said "Ohh, it was a deer that ran out onto the road". It was kind of gross and creepy, seeing it laying there with blood coming out of its mouth in the middle of the road. It's very weird that there would be a deer in that area, during the daytime. With the heavy traffic in either direction at that time of day (when isn't there traffic on the QEW nowadays anyway?) the poor thing never had a chance. I've never seen anything (or anyone) get shot before, in real life.

OK, so the kids are going back to school soon, and the oldest is headed off to middle school (junior high). We just got the package from the school today, outlining in detail all of the stuff she's expected to have, and all the various fees we're expected to shell out when she goes for her orientation day, in, umm, 8 days. Now, mind you, some of the stuff is optional, like the weekly hot lunch program that we already promised her she could have (that you have to pay for upfront, 8 weeks at a time), and the school pictures (stupid that you have to pay for that before school even starts).. But then there's the gym uniform, the mandatory lock, and god knows what else. I stopped listening about that point.. All told, next week my wallet will be about $135 lighter, in addition to the couple hundred bucks that all the school supplies are going to cost on top of that. For one kid. One down, and two to go! Geez. Thankfully the second oldest loses everything so we don't get the Cadillac of everything anymore, and the youngest is only going into Kindergarten so he doesn't need jack anyhow. Still. Ridiculous for them to expect a large outlay of money like that before school starts, they could have at least sent this stuff out a little more than a week before they expect us to hand over the cash. I'm not terribly impressed. Like, I haven't made my first million on the Internet yet, guys... Fortunately, I take my good parenting ideas from the likes of Homer Simpson, so, "6 more years until you're 18, and you're out the door!" |

Wow, Saturday morning shortly after 4:00 AM I saw the biggest 'shooting star' I've ever seen. The light trail was about as long as my middle finger (you know, hold your finger up to the sky) and was incredibly intense - it was a bright white light, and what I thought was really incredible is that the light remained in the sky for a good 2 or 3 seconds, the whole finger-length of light. It was a really bright flash, because I wasn't really looking up at the sky, I was getting out of the car and saw a flash of light out of the corner of my eye, which made me look up. That's when I saw it streak, and then burn out with the trail remaining lit up. Hey, it was cool! That must have been one hell of a big rock falling into the atmosphere... |
