Breastfeeding Blogger threatened by the Pork Board
Thursday, 01 February 2007

This story is so far one of the dumbest, most ridiculous things I've heard about so far this year.

The Lactivist (a hobby site run by a blogger who is a work-at-home mother, whose intent is to educate the public, create awareness, and promote breastfeeding and human milk banking) has been handed a Cease and Desist order from the US National Pork Board, for allegedly violating their trademark "the other white meat".

Say whaaa?

To raise money to fund the site and for non-profit milk banks, this blogger has a CafePress store that sells t-shirts with funny breastfeeding slogans.  Including one that says "the other white milk" on it, which is of course, the source of the Pork Board's complaint.  In short, the Lactivist says "Apparently the National Pork Board is worried that someone might come to my breastfeeding blog, check out the shirts and worry that when I say "white milk" what I really mean is "thick and juicy, straight from the hog PORK.""

Um, yeah, that was the first thought that came to my mind, if I saw that slogan plastered across a pair of breasts.  "Mmmm, that gives me a real hankerin' for a nice thick pork chop".  Yup.

Seriously, where do they find the people to come up with stuff like this?

Oh, but that's not even the REAL funny part of it.  The issue they seem to have the biggest problem with is shown in the following portion of the C&D letter:  "In addition, your use of this slogan also tarnishes the good reputation of the National Pork Board's mark in light of your apparent attempt to promote the use of breastmilk beyond merely for infant consumption, such as with the following slogans on your website in close proximity to the slogan "The Other White Milk." "Dairy Diva," "Nursing, Nature's Own Breast Enhancement," "Eat at Mom's, fast-fresh-from the breast," and "My Milk is the Breast."

Apparent use of breastmilk beyond infant consumption?  Are these people serious?!  What could possibly give anyone even the slightest idea that this is the case?  I have a hard time believing anyone would get that idea if it was simply a site selling humourous shirts, never mind a site with the focus on good infant feeding that the Lactivist has!

What makes the story even more galling, is the fact that instead of simply sending a nice friendly email to the author requesting that she discontinue the use of this supposed trademark violation, the National Pork Board and their lawyers at Faegre & Benson, came out in full force with legal paperwork and the threat of further legal action.

You can read the rest of the story about the National Pork Board Bullies here.  Thanks to Shoemoney for posting about this as well, which is where I first heard this story.

Website Success

I'm feeling pretty proud of myself today.  Google has updated/exported PageRank and I was pleased to see that a couple new sites I started in the last few months managed to pick up PR2 (including the Online Sudoku site I started less than two months ago).  What I'm really pleased about though, is that I finally have a site that's moved over PR3 to a nice shiny PR4.  OK, not the biggest deal in the world, but I've been trying to get it over that hump for quite a while now; I've never had a site rank over PR3 before, except for a couple of abandoned MySpace blogs that I registered to grab a few decent PR4 links from.

I'm also proud of my PR4 site, because it's ranking very highly in Google for most of the major keywords the site relates to, and I even have #1 spot on Google for a bunch of them.  They may be specific long phrases, but they're searched for, and they're bringing traffic for free.

Internet Marketing
Monday, 08 January 2007

I finally feel as if I'm on the way to becoming a successful Internet marketer.  OK, so I had one affiliate sale today but considering it pays a great commission, and that I've only had it running on the site it's on for a couple of days, and only had contextual ads pointing at the page since last night, I'm pretty happy.  That's $10 for doing next to nothing.  The longest part of the process was actually just sitting here and waiting for the godawful affiliate program search to show me the results for the product I was looking for..  Can't believe I never thought of promoting this particular product before, considering that it fits in perfectly with the site, and that I know the product myself and recommend it wholeheartedly.

I think that's my tip #1 for potential affiliate marketers - don't overlook the everyday stuff that you know about.  If you're running a website, likely it's about a topic you know something about.  Spend some time brainstorming products and services related to that topic, and spend the time (no matter how slow it is) to search for an affiliate program that will give you links to specific products that you can tie into your site.  Generic banners do work sometimes, but say if you've written a review about the new Sony 70" WEGA TV you just bought, don't just link to your affiliate partner with a generic banner for TV's - search out an affiliate that sells that exact TV, and link right to that page to purchase.  You'll convert much better.  (OK that might be a bit of an extreme example, I don't think you'll sell too many $10,000 TV sets online, but you get the idea.)  Specific is better.
